Why Spring Is Not The Best Time To Overseed And Aerate

People often want to know when the best time to overseed is, and they often assume its the spring.

On the surface, that makes plenty of sense. Spring has always been a symbol of renewal because its a time that dormant growth revives and new growth flourishes.

Its certainly true that spring is a good time for grass to grow. Warm weather is returning, and several months of growing time lie ahead. There are some challenges though, and they can quickly lay waste to your time, effort, and money.

Early spring is a great time for new grass because of the factors we just mentioned, but those same factors are also conditions that favor weed growth. If you overseed in spots that are already thick and strong, this is less of a problem, but weak areas left from winter or the previous fall are at risk. When weeds overtake a struggling spot thats just been overseeded, they then have the potential to spread to other areas, causing even more unsightliness and more damage.

For some people, the solution to this is to use a pre-emergent herbicide treatment to prevent new weed growth from appearing, but the problem with that is pretty apparent: theres a good chance youre going to also kill the new growth that you want, and then you have to start all over again.

That something is summer.

Which Grass Seed Should I Use For Overseeding

How To Overseed Your Lawn

There is no right answer to this question. The grass species you should use depend on lots of different factors.

  • How often you use your lawn and what you use it for.
  • What soil type you have
  • How much sunshine your lawn gets in a day
  • Mowing height how short do you want to mow your lawn?
  • Which grass species seem thrive in your lawn
  • Whether you are overseeding the whole area or just repairing patches

For a family lawn, I would suggest using a ryegrass based seedmix and overseeding the whole lawn.

For a close mown lawn, fescues and bent grasses are traditionally used because they will tolerate being maintained really short. Watch my masterclass on cutting lawns really short.

For a shaded lawn, fescues are great but see if you can identify the species that are already doing ok in that area before you buy seed. You might be surprised. Not sure how to identify grasses? We know you came to this post because you want to know when to overseed your bermuda grass lawn, but that may not be the correct thing to do.

You see, bermuda is a self-spreading grass. It grows by sending out stolons that extend along the surface of the grass. For this reason, it is often not necessary to overseed bermuda.

    The Backyard Master

Bermuda grass can almost always be repaired or restored through techniques that dont include using seed. You typically just need to use a weed killer and a good fertilizer and it will spread and grow all on its own.

The other issue with overseeding bermuda, is that there are many different bermuda grass seed varieties and it will be difficult to match the exact variety that is growing in your yard. Overseeding may result in mis-matched patches that look worse than the brown spots you are trying to fix.

For this reason, we dont recommend overseeding bermuda if youre just trying to fix a few dead patches.

That being said if your lawn is practically dead, then you would want to consider overseeding with bermuda.

Many homeowners in northern states choose cool-season grasses, and southern areas often select warm-season grasses. Each type of grass has distinctive growth patterns and needs, so make sure to speak with our lawn professionals if youre not sure what variety to choose. Here are the optimal overseeding times for several locations and grass types:

    • Pacific Northwest : Plant new grasses about six weeks before the first projected snowfall. These are generally cool-season grasses.
    • Southwest U.S. : Early spring is the best time for overseeding in these areas.
    • Southern states : April, May and June are good times to overseed in this huge area. The best time may vary each year depending on soil temperatures. You want warm-season grass to have a cozy environment to germinate in.
    • Northeast states : Due to the cold temperatures prevalent in these areas, its best to start planting grass seeds in August or September to give them some time to grow before winter hits.
    • Midwest U.S. : Weather conditions vary quite a bit depending on how far north you live, but a safe bet is to overseed lawns by the end of August or early September at the latest.

Here are the details of various grass types and locations.

Best Time To Overseed Lawn In Northeast

As a simple rule of thumb for northeasterners, if you overseed in late-August through early-September youll get good results. This timing is in the sweet spot to let those new grass seeds take advantage of the fall grass growth spurt, while at the same gives them enough time to mature and get ready for winter. Before the first snowfall, youll see your lawn transformed!

We know climates in the northeast vary by region. Coastal areas, such as New Jersey and Delaware are usually more temperate than the northern portions of states such as Maine, New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire. To help precisely time your overseeding, its recommended by the Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance to overseed roughly 45 days before the first fall frost.

    When Should You Overseed

If youre part of our 6-Step or 4-Step Fertilizer Program, the best time to have us reseed your lawn is at the start of Spring before your Crabgrass Control Treatment or in early Fall . Most of the turf varieties in our area are cool season grasses, meaning they grow best when the soil temperature is in the mid-60s to 70s. Rainfall is more common during those times which helps the seed stay put and aids in germination!

If you plan to reseed any part of your yard on your own and youve purchased a fertilizer program from us, please remember to notify us before your first lawn treatment to ensure the areas you reseed have enough time to establish roots before a lawn treatment is completed. We dont want to waste any seed!

    Water And Fertilize After Overseeding

Even if you manage to overseed at precisely the right soil temperature, new seeds still need help to get the best germination. Once you have scattered your seeds, you need to water the areas generously at least three to four times in the following seven days.

Once the seeds have begun to germinate and show their first sign of growth, it’s then a good idea to apply fertilizer to further their progress. Finally, once your lawn or specific overseeded areas hit around two and a half inches of growth, mow the entire lawn to promote further growth.

What Is Overseeding And Why Do You Need To Act Now

Overseeding refers to the proven practice of seeding into your existing lawn to establish additional grass growth and finally, fill in any thin, dead, or bare spots.

There are two optimum times of year for successfully overseeding your lawnfall and spring. Fall is the best time of year to overseed a lawn, but if you cant wait that long and would like to have a great lawn to enjoy over the summer months, spring is your second best choice.Spring rain, cool nights, and ample sunshine are all positive factors in building a green, healthy, full lawn. One drawback to overseeding in the spring is the growth of weeds. We will tackle that issue at another time.

Why Summer Isn’t The Best Time To Aerate Either

What is the BEST date to Overseed or Renovate Your Lawn?

Summer, like spring, sounds like a great time to overseed because of the warm temperatures and the many days that remain before frost returns and growth goes dormant, but summer is the worst of the three growing seasons for overseeding.

First, once the soil temperatures warm to a certain level, growth slows by a drastic degree. For healthy, established grass, thats not such a big problem. For new grass, though, that can be fatal because its not yet strong enough to withstand the heat, which is the second problem.

When grass dies or weakens, it becomes vulnerable to weeds, and when weeds take over, they spread, leading to more damaged grass and more weeds. Pretty soon, things can get out of control. Now youre spending time and money using post-emergent herbicides to battle the weeds, and youve already lost the time and money you invested in planting new seeds.

Summer is a tough-enough time for healthy grass. Its a lot tougher on new grass, and for grass planted late in the spring to treat for weeds early on, its usually fatal without a lot of intervention.
