Terrain And Yard Size

Overtested: Troy-Bilt Riding Mowers

As experts noted, the size of your lawn will determine whether you should invest in a riding lawn mower its usually not worth it for homeowners with less than half an acre. However, the type of terrain can also affect how the mower is used. A lawn tractor will work well on any relatively flat lawn and on landscapes with a lot of uneven sectors, especially if it features a steering wheel that provides more control. If you have a relatively flat yard with obstacles like rocks and gravel, a ZTR will probably show better results as it can turn 360 degrees on a small spot and pivot at sharp angles, McKenzie said.

Customers Can Get Free Inspection Repair

Kayla Clarke, Senior Web Producer

Craftsman and Troy-Bilt riding lawn mowers are being recalled because they can fail to come to a complete stop and continue to move at about one mile per hour when the clutch/brake pedal is fully depressed.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said they pose a low-speed crash hazard. Around 6,200 units have been recalled. Officials said consumers should stop using the recalled lawn mowers and contact Craftsman or Troy-Bilt for a free inspection and repair. Pickup and delivery of the lawn mower will be arranged if necessary at no cost to the consumer.

Recalled lawn mowers are not marked with a green X. They were manufactured from July 20, 2021 through December 17, 2022. They have serial numbers 1G20MB20001 through 1L17MB20228.

Gas Versus Electric Mowers

Many riding lawn mowers are gas-powered, meaning they require gasoline to operate. Others, meanwhile, are electric and use a battery-powered motor that needs to be charged. Though gas riding mowers are more durable and typically better suited for large lawns, Hill cautioned that theyre usually much louder than their electric counterparts and are less eco-friendly since they emit fumes.

Electric riding mowers can be cheaper and easier to maintain since they dont require purchasing or changing out the engine oil, among other upkeep requirements. However, electric riding mowers do have their downfalls: Their functionality is limited to the amount of time they can be used in a single charge if you have several acres of land , the power may not be enough to cut your entire lawn in one sitting.

Types Of Riding Lawn Mowers

There are essentially three types of riding mowers to choose from: rear-engine mowers, front-engine lawn tractors, and zero-turn mowers. What type of mower you want depends on your property size, terrain, budget, and preferred method of mowing. We recommend a rear-engine mower for up to two acres and a tractor or zero-turn model for up to four acres. Although lawn tractors might have convenient attachments to help with other yard work, zero-turn mowers have a better turning radius to accurately follow edges and efficiently turn around on passes when cutting large amounts of flat land.

All three types are available in gas- or electric-powered machines. Battery mowers are quieter than their gas-engine counterparts, whereas the latter can more easily handle extreme mowing conditions, such as tall, thick grass. Regardless of the power source, riding lawn mowers come with multiple cutting height settings, typically from 1.5 to 4.5 inches.

Engine Power: Gas Or Battery

If you consider the engine power, there are two types of riding lawnmowers. The first runs on a gas engine, which has several benefits.

You get a constant supply of power from the engine so long as there is fuel in the tank, and refueling takes only a few minutes, so mowing goes on almost uninterrupted. However, gas engines produce CO2 emissions and are noisy.

With batteries and motors, the ride is quieter, and there are no harmful gas emissions. However, as the battery runs out, some mowers might exhibit reduced cutting performance. Charging takes a lot of time, so you will have to pause mowing and continue later or the following day.

Rear Engine Riding Mower

As the name suggests, this mower has its engine at the rear end, leaving the front section clearer for better visibility. It has a steering wheel as well, so you can navigate uphill or downhill easily.

They are ideal for the job, but most are usually small riding mowers and have small engines. As such, they might not be practical for manicuring large lawns, which leaves tractors as the best option.

A lawn mower can be a necessary home appliance for many homeowners, but those who have larger lawns to upkeep may find that self-propelled or push lawn mowers just dont cut it. Experts recommend using riding lawn mowers for larger lawns since they have more powerful engines better equipped to efficiently handle bigger patches of grass. And as the name suggests, theyre designed so you can ride on top of them while you mow the lawn, which can come in handy when theres a lot of land to tackle.

Unlike any other type of lawnmower, the riding ones let you just sit and steer instead of pushing a manually propelled type or walking behind a self-propelled type, said Bryan McKenzie, a landscape designer and co-founder of Bumper Crop Times. The riding type is much more cumbersome as it includes a larger motor and a full-sized seat, but it allows you to mow large areas significantly faster without any back fatigue all you need is good sunscreen.

Run Time: Fuel Or Battery Cell Capacity

The fuel tank size and engine capacity determine how much time you have to manicure your yard uninterrupted when using a gas-powered mower. However, the size of the fuel tank has more weight in the equation, and the bigger it is, the better.

For mowers with a 42-inch deck or higher, I recommend at least a 3-gallon tank to minimize interruptions, especially if your lawn is expansive.

When working with an electric zero turn mower, or riding mower the battery is the fuel, so you need to check its capacity in ampere-hours .

Amp Hours

An ampere-hour is a unit of electric charge that results from multiplying electric current by time. Battery manufacturers use this unit to rate their batteries, which shows how much power they can supply for an hour.

For instance, a 75Ah battery can supply 75 amps for an hour or 37.5 amps for two hours. The higher the Ah rating, the more charge it can hold, which is better because it increases the run time.

Best Riding Lawn Mowers For Hills And Slopes

Having a beautiful lawn will make your home stand out in the neighborhood until it is time to mow it. Mowing flat lawns is not such a big challenge, and you can use almost any type of riding lawnmower.

However, if you have a hilly yard, you must consider some specific features to help you navigate uphill and downhill as well as how you drive across slopes in your ride-on mower.

I have detailed the main criteria to look out for when searching out the best riding lawn mower for hills

Cut Quality & Options

The 54-inch stamped steel cutting deck harvests wide swaths of grass in a single pass. The zero-turning radius also means that all the grass is cut when you make a turn for the next row. Yet the Troy-Bilt Mustang Z54 wasnt just engineered for clearing wide open spaces. Its also surprisingly nimble for a riding lawnmower this size.

Its also very easy to adjust the height of the Troy-Bilt Mustang Z54s cutting deck. This lets you adjust for the current conditions or simply change the cutting height with ease to match specific landscaping features.

The two-deck wheels are also the sort of thing youll come to appreciate if you need to mow areas where the terrain changes a lot. Whether youre cutting the grass on a bumpy lawn with exposed tree roots or you are carefully mowing the transition between the rough and the green at a golf course, those two small wheels will save not only the turf but the structural integrity of the cutting blades.

Electric Start Wont Start Just Clicking

I have a brand new mower. Charged it for 10 hours it wont start just clicking!

Does the mower start when you pull the rope? If so, then your electric starter is bad. You need to take it back to the store for repair or replacement.

Even if the mower won’t start when you pull the rope, since the mower is brand new, take it back to the store for repair or replacement.

I have the same issue, except I’ve had it for a couple of years. Mine recently started misbehaving and not shutting off when blade control handle was let go, and took me pushing the little metal switch thingy on the mower in. I recently fixed that, and electric start worked for a bit, and then suddenly it wouldn’t start anymore. So I bought a new off brand mower only to have it suddenly start running slow, and it’s self propel quit working. It of course has an engine that needs primed . Then I managed to fix the mower after discovering the ground wire was half broken, so I redid the ground wire And replaced the cover and lo and behold it started but then later on electric start stopped working at some point. It still starts with the the pull cord, but also it will sometimes spit black exhaust out when starting. Not a lot, but once it gets up to speed meaning the engine, no color to exhaust which is good. But when you shut it off it smells strongly of fuel. I’ve done carb cleaner and fuel treatment and it runs better, but still does the black exhaust.
