How To Diagnose And Fix A Toro Lawnmower Wont Start

All internal combustion engines need fuel, air, and an ignition source to be simultaneously delivered to create combustion of sufficient intensity to push the piston down in the piston chamber.

If something is missing or delivered incorrectly, the engine will not start.

Following this logic, to find why the Toro lawn mower isnt working, you must investigate each of these systems until you find the problem.

To help you, we have devised the following checklist, which you can follow, in the suggested sequence until you identify the problem and try to fix the Toro Lawnmower in the most efficient way possible.

Bad Toro Safety Switch

Toro lawn mower won’t start.

Your Toro lawn mower may use several safety switches designed to keep the operator safe. The manufacturer installs safety switches to prevent the mower deck to run without the operator present.

It also has a safety switch involved to not start when your parking break isnt engaged. If these safety switches fail, your mower may not start.

FIX: Test the switch using a multimeter or you can temporarily bypass the safety switch to identify a bad switch. Do not operate a mower without the safety switch.

Never run a mower when a safety switch is bypassed. You never know when you will encounter a situation where the safety switch can save you from serious injury.

Blocked Fuel Line On Your Toro Mower

Earlier, we talked about how the fuel filter can become clogged. The same can be said for the fuel lines which may also be clogged with the same substances. Its important to check the fuel hose to make sure that there is nothing blocking it and you can do this by taking out the end of the hose and putting it into a container.

Using the shut off valves, you can then start and stop the flow of fuel to see whether it runs freely through the hose. If it doesnt, youve just discovered why your Toro lawn mower wont start.

How To Fix It

If the fuel line is clogged then youll need to remove it and clean it using a carburetor cleaner. Spray this into the tube and then take a can of compressed air to force it through. This should remove any residue that has built up inside.

Sometimes, this might not be enough and the line may remain blocked. In this case, its time to replace the fuel line.

Check The Toro Lawnmower Has Enough Petrol

It isnt very kind to suggest checking if the fuel tank is empty. It does happen, and therefore its worth stating.

While talking about gas, if the Toro Lawnmower is left too long, the gas begins to form carboxylic acid and changes consistency, making it degrade this affects the ability to ignite and may stop the lawnmower from working.

If there is any question about the quality of the gas, replace it with a newer can.

Last worked one month ago. Now, I pull and pull, but engine won’t start

This youtube video @ 2:53 is how my lawn mower sounds and acts. Later on the guy sprays some stuff into the engine and shows how it will start and cut off. My lawn mower won’t even do that.

TL DR: Aside from checking/changing the spark plug, is there anything else I can do or should I just figure out how to load the thing in my car and have it serviced?

Troubleshooting steps I’ve done:

  • Drained the oil and put new SAE 30 in.
  • Drained the fuel and put new fuel in .
  • Watched a youtube video saying use 13/16 inch spark plug
  • Looked up accessories for mower on Home Depot and was recommended 13/16 spark plug
  • Purchased the spark plug and a 13/16 spark plug socket
  • Tried to remove the spark plug with purchased socket and the socket was too damn big
  • Much shakes fist, very frustration
  • Plugged the spark plug wire back into spark plug and tried to start
  • Pulled a few times and back at square one

More troubleshooting with DIY users help:

  • I’ve verified blue spark by unscrewing the spark plug from the engine, stuck it back into the “lead” , and pulled a few times.

These are for the Tecumseh engine, so I don’t know how they would translate, if at all, to the Briggs & Stratton engine.

Check Toro Lawnmowers Air Filter

Sufficient air mixing with the fuel is the third leg of combustion. If a blockage prevents sufficient air from getting to the cylinder, the engine will not start.

Now is the time to check the air filter. To do this, first unclip the top of the air-filter cover, which, looking from the back of the lawnmower, is in the front left quadrant of the mower.

Remove and inspect the air filter. If it is filthy, replace it with a new unit. Reinstall the air filter and clip the cover back on.

Check For A Faulty Carburetor

A carburetor helps supply fuel to the engine. Without this, it is impossible for an engine to function normally. The problems that occur when a carburetor is faulty include hesitation, stalling, rough idle, flooding, and a few similar problems.

Before diagnosing your carburetor as being faulty, here are some of the main symptoms that reflect a bad carburetor:

  • Reduced engine performance

If you notice any of these problems along with the mower refusing to start, you can be sure that the carburetor is the problem.

Air Filter Plugged In A Toro Lawn Mower

Air is a required to start your lawn mower and keep it running. Because you are using your Toro in the outdoor elements with grass and dirt be tossed in the air while mowing, your air filter can become plugged.

Its important to frequently check and clean your air filters to prevent starting and engine problems. When your Toros air filter is so plugged the engine cant access air, it can overheat.

Overheating of the engine can cause internal engine damage. Read more about the effects oCleaning out your air filter and replacing it when necessary will prevent any serious problems caused by lack of air.

Repair: Remove your air filter from the air filter housing to check for dirt build up. Clean a paper air filter by tapping it against a hard surface to knock as much dirt out as you can.

Check to make sure you can still see light through the paper element by holding up to the light. Youll have to replace your filter if you cant see light shine through the paper.

If your Toro mower uses a foam filter, youll want to replace it with a new filter if it is brittle, torn or has brown spots on it. To clean your foam filter, wash it with a mild dish soap to remove as much dirt and oil as you can get out of the filter.

Rinse the filter until the soap is removed. Squeeze the water out of the filter and lay flat to air dry. Laying in the sun will help it dry faster. Once it is dry, lightly coat the filter with an oil designed for foam filters.

Dirty Carburetor On Your Toro Mower

Your Toro lawn mowers carburetor may cause your mower to die while running. The carburetor controls the amount of fuel and air that is mixed so the engine can form a combustion in the cylinder. When the carburetor becomes dirty and gummed up, it may no longer function and allow fuel to flow out of the carburetor.

Repair: Most of the time the carburetor can be cleaned, but other times the buildup of deposits can be so bad that it is unable to be efficiently cleaned. You may not even want to tackle cleaning your carburetor and find it easier to just purchase a new one and replace it.

If you are mechanically inclined you can try to clean your carburetor yourself, otherwise a lawn mower repair shop will be able to help you. Read my steps on how to clean your lawn mower carburetor here.

Broken Toro Fuel Pump

Toro Recycler Lawn Mower Won’t Start – Troubleshooting Carburetor and Ignition Coil Spark

Your Toro may use a fuel pump if it needs to pump fuel up to the carburetor because it sits higher than the fuel tank. Pressure is built inside the pump and pushes fuel to the carburetor. A pump can fail overtime causing it to no longer have ability to build pressure.

You may be able to see your pump is damaged or leaking at the seams, other times you will have to test whether the pump is working. You can do this by using your fuel shut-off valve or hose clamps to stop and start fuel flow. Check to make sure you are getting fuel to the inlet port of the fuel pump. Once this is verified, check the opposite side of the pump for pumped fuel.

Repair: Replace your fuel pump if you are not seeing a steady or pulsating flow of gas from the outlet port on the fuel pump.

Tip #: Check Your Fuel

Todays fuel doesnt age well, so if your gas is more than 30 days old replace it. Whenever its possible, try to use non-oxygenated fuel and stay away from gas that contains more than 10 percent ethanol. Dont buy more than a months worth of gas and add Toro premium fuel treatment to your fuel when you buy it since this can really extend its life.

Check For A Malfunctioning Bail Lever

Most lawn mowers have a bail or a lever on the handle, which allows them to start the engine. This is because the bail or lever is attached to a cable, which in turn is attached to the ignition switch.

You need to know that an ignition switch is in the off position when an engine is running and is on when the mower is stopped. When the mower is running, it is the bail lever that holds the ignition switch in the off position. Sometimes, there can be a problem with the bail or with the switch, causing it to remain in a stuck position. This will then prevent the engine from getting turned on.

The Starter Rope Is Hard To Pull Or Seems Stuck:

A typical cause for this is that the engine flywheel brake is engaged. Be sure to bring the bar down all the way to the handle before pulling.

This can also happen if your mower blade is dragging in grass or clogged with grass clippings. Move your mower off your lawn to a hard surface. With the mower turned off and the spark plug wire disengaged, clear the underside of the mower of excessive clippings, then resume a safe mowing position, and give it another yank.
