What Is Landscape Design

Landscaping design refers to the art of analyzing an existing landscape, planning how to transform it through flora and fauna design and working with a client to ensure goals are met. They may also call for grading and the construction of hardscaping surfaces like walkways or patios to add to the enjoyment of the space.

95 Small Courtyard Garden with Seating Area Design Ideas

Before you start digging, youll need to have a plan in mind. Start with these 4 steps:

  • Outline: Start with a rough sketch of your property or area to be worked on. This doesnt have to be to scale at this point, but should include any permanent features such as your house, shed, large trees or shrubs that are staying in place, areas that are currently paved, patios, pools, etc.
  • Measure: Take that rough sketch outside and measure everything. Note the measurements on the sketch. Note where windows and doors are for views and traffic patterns, and also where water faucets and electrical outlets are.
  • Transfer: Transfer your property map to graph paper and draw to scale this will become your master copy. Make note of sun and shade patterns, wind-prone areas, slopes, etc.
  • Trace: Use tracing paper over the top of your master copy and begin experimenting with designs.

Small Landscape Design Ideas (10 Secrets)

Armed with a quiver of prestigious degrees, Leslie Bennett began her career in the fields of environmental justice, land-use and cultural-property law, and preservation. Then she decided it was time to get her hands dirty. I felt useless being a super-wonky desk worker, Bennett recalls. I wanted to reconnect to the land. So she set off on a journey into the world of organic farming, apprenticing at operations on both sides of the Atlantic. After returning to her native Northern California, Bennett launched her garden enterprise in Oakland in 2010 with a mission to bring the wonders of green space to urban dwellers of various backgrounds. The firms equity pricing structure provides small subsidies for clients with historically limited access to the kind of private urban oases that are the stock-in-trade of most landscape design operations. We see gardens as spaces of opportunity and uplift, spaces where people can tap into their ancestral cultures, says Bennett, who has translated that philosophy into projects across the Bay Area, including Black Sanctuary Gardensan arts initiative focused on creating natural refuges in collaboration with Black women and Black communities in and around Oakland. In Bennetts words, Its about awesome Black women being fabulous in their fabulous gardens. pinehouseediblegardens.com

    Landscape Designer Facts And Information

Landscape Design – Site Planning – Part 1

So what does a landscape designer do anyway? Before you begin your quest for a designer, it helps to understand more about what he/she does or doesnt do. Landscape designer facts that may impact your decision are as follows:

  • You can find a list of professional landscape designers at the national Association for Professional Landscape Designer website:
  • Landscape designers are unlicensed so they are limited by your state in what they can depict in a drawing. Typically, they create detailed planting plans with conceptual drawings for hardscape, irrigation, and lighting.
  • Landscape designers cannot create and sell construction drawings unless they are working under a licensed landscape contractor or landscape architect.
  • Landscape designers typically work with or for landscape contractors to make the installation process seamless for their clients.
  • Sometimes landscape designers obtain their landscape contractors license so they can offer you both the Design portion of the project as well as the Build portion of your project.
  • If you have a very complicated project, you may choose to hire a licensed landscape architect.

    Take Time Into Account

Plant selection must consider a plant’s growth rate, its mature size and form, and the maintenance it will require. Fast growing plants may or may not be desirable depending on the size of the site, the design intent, and the expected level of maintenance. It is important to know the eventual mature size of plants so they can be placed in the right location and spaced properly when they are installed.

Giving plants room to grow is a challenge because the common mature size is typically based on optimal growing conditions and the environmental conditions of a site may cause a plant to grow larger or stay smaller. If plants are spaced too closely the overcrowded plants will present a maintenance issue. Provide enough space so that, when fully mature, the plants are barely touching their neighbors and a somewhat solid growing mass is formed . It is important, however, to leave space so the plant does not touch the side of the house-this space allows for air circulation and home maintenance. Another common mistake is to plant too close to utilities such as AC units and meters.
