Plant A Fruit And Vegetable Garden

How To Design The Perfect Landscape | Landscape Design 101

Vegetable and flower boxes bring in welcome crops.

Skip the trip to the grocery store or farmers market by adding a backyard fruit or vegetable garden. For a simple design, consider a few rows of plant beds with gravel walkways between them. Even a novice can start a backyard vegetable garden with a few basic pointers.

When In Doubt Xeriscaping Is Your Friend

Unlike other forms of landscaping, xeriscaping means you dont have to concern yourself with watering . Choose vegetation and materials that require little irrigation, like succulents, cactus, sand, and stones. Little to no grass means you dont need to constantly water, trim, and mow your lawn.

Because of its minimalist take on landscaping, xeriscaping is extremely budget-friendly, particularly in areas that experience droughts or dont have regular access to water. Youll spend less money on watering, fertilizer, and pest control with a xeriscape-developed yard.

Who Will Be Using Your Yard

Think about who will be using your yard and how they will use it. Will children be using your yard? Do you have pets? Are you hoping to use your yard for outdoor entertaining? Remember you can create different spaces for different uses in your landscape using strategic plantings and hardscapes. Walkways can be used to move people from one area to another.

Since you will be using and maintaining your yard consider what your maintenance style and budget are. Be as realistic as you can. How much time will you truly have to put into your landscape? Or if you won’t have the time will you have the money to pay someone else to put in the time? How much do you have to invest in your landscape? Determining the answer to these questions will help to ensure the success of your landscape for years to come.

Growing Your Garden Quickly

If you want big trees, get them in the ground first. Ground cover grows quickly and can be added after.

When it comes to medium trees, lipstick maples, crepe myrtles, crab apples, magnolias and flowering plums and cherries are all pretty fast-growing. And pretty!

When it comes to evergreens, most native options like wattles and eucalypts are relatively quick too.

But be careful when it comes to the real fast-growing trees. While a tempting option, trees that grow fast tend to grow very large.

Understand A Few Of The Elements Of Design

How to Start Landscaping Your Yard

A great landscape will take into account several elements of good design. These include color, form, pattern, light, balance, contrast, rhythm, variety, and unity.

For my backyard landscape I have purposely chosen plants with a bluish-gray color and plants with yellow blooms. These textures and colors will create contrast that is sure to dominate my landscape. Ive achieved form with stone around my beds and variety by having a hardwood tree, a flowering crape myrtle, grasses, and shrubs.

There is rhythm because Ive placed identical plants in all of the different beds. You will see this rhythm repeated as you scan across my landscape. The nandina will bloom red berries in the winter and an olive tree will be covered in white blooms in the spring.

These before and after shots are from a home we previously owned. In the Before picture notice the wall around the entire front of the house. When we bought the house every neighbor we met would ask what we thought of the wall.

We removed the wall and created a small courtyard. Balance, rhythm, unity, and form. Below is another before picture from a different angle.

We took the wall down, removed a dead-ish ash tree, and trimmed the trees. This created a lot more light both inside and outside.

You are the artist here and the landscape is your canvas. Think about where you want the eye to move.

Light The Way With Lanterns

Your curb appeal neednt disappear after that sun goes down. Install a few lamps around the yard, and youll add instant charm.

You can use lamps to provide light to your outdoor spaces, such as around the dining area or your reading bench. Lamps also can help guide you along a safe path, like to the front door or the garden, while also providing you with a sense of security.

Cost: Lamps are typically sold in bundles. A bundle of six or 10 lamps may cost you between $20 and $100.

Incorporate A Bench Swing

A bench swing is a playful approach to relaxing.

Though bench swings are common porch additions, this doesnt mean you cant have one in your backyard as well. There are various prefab bench swing options available, or you could design and build one yourself. Although many bench swings can and do stand alone, you could also consider hanging one from a pergola to achieve that front-porch look.

Types Of Landscaping And Green Industry Businesses

Believe it or not, theres more than one type of landscaping firm and they don’t all offer the same types of services. Theres actually a wide range of services a green industry business might provide.

This is important to note because some of these fields require specialized skills beyond just a green thumb. Fields like landscape architecture or hardscape design might require formal education and/or professional experience.

If youre starting a new business completely from scratch, consider starting with a general landscaping business that offers traditional landscaping and lawn care services. You can always increase your expertise and offer additional services later on.

Perennials Made Easy! How To Create Amazing Gardens

While reputable studies are limited, landscaping industry blogs discuss projected trends for 2020 and beyond. One prediction by The Greenery Inc. vice president Bill Davoli tells of a strong year for 2020 with the largest work backlog landscapers have seen in the past 12 years.

This trend is supported by the fact that the landscaping services industry has grown 3.8% per year on average between 2015 and 2020. This is good news for aspiring new business owners looking to enter into the lawn care industry.

Further, the average salary for landscapers in the U.S. has seen an 11% increase from 2019 to 2020. While not the highest of salaries, landscapers can certainly make a livable wage in this industry.

The main takeaway is that landscaping is on the rise and there is great income potential, especially if you run your own business. While being employed by a landscaping firm may hinder your wages, running your own opens the door to near-limitless opportunities.

Cost: The flowers will be your only buy here, costing between $10 and $30 per plant. Your old watering can shouldnt cost you a cent.

Group Similar Plants Together For Irrigation

Grouping vegetation with similar watering needs into specific “hydrozones” reduces water use and protects the plants from both underwatering and overwatering by allowing you to water to each zone’s specific needs. For example, turf areas and shrub areas should always be separated into different hydrozones because of their differing water needs.

Snap Lines On The Sand

You can stretch a string between stakes to create a layout line for setting bricks, but simply snapping a chalk line in the sand is quicker, plus you dont have a string in the way. With layout lines snapped on the sand, laying bricks is faster and easier. The chalk wont stick to dry sand, so you may have to mist the sand with water before snapping lines. Then snap layout lines directly on the sand using a standard carpenters chalk line reel.

Just looking at that extensive list of the elements that go into landscaping is a little overwhelming, right? If you were to start off with a completely empty piece of land and you had to create a beautiful and functional yard from scratch, theres absolutely no question that that would require a significant investment yes, even if you came pre-armed with a great set of DIY skills and you werent planning to hire any landscape contractors at all.

Thats not usually the scenario we face, fortunately. People who have recently moved into a new home will almost certainly start off with something, and that something typically includes a lot of elements that they can work with, even if they arent thrilled with the status quo.

If you recognize that general scenario, and you are hoping to landscape your yard on a tight budget, the first rule is that you must, unquestionably, make peace with the fact that you will not be able to enjoy the yard of your dreams overnight. Achieving fast and beautiful results takes money, so you will have to create your garden gradually.

Getting a better idea of the work that needs to be done to make your vision come to life is a great way to start deciding how you can best save money while still getting the yard you want. Start by answering these questions:

Not crazy about how your fence looks? Whether you have a wooden or chain link fence, there are several ways to make it visually appealing. Use these budget landscaping ideas to beautify your fence, especially if it encompasses your entire backyard.

Ways to Upgrade Your Chain Link Fence

  • Paint it. A fresh coat of paint is more effective than you might think. We suggest choosing a color that matches the rest of your house.
  • Cover it with an awning. Find a fun fabric at your local craft store, measure it and drape it over your chain link fence. Make sure the material can withstand the elements!
  • Cover it with vines. While it may take a while for vines to cover your entire fence, the finished product is well worth the wait.

Ways to Upgrade Your Wooden Fence

  • Install hanging baskets. You can never have enough flowers. All it takes is an S hook and your hanging basket of choice to add a pop of color to your fence.
  • Install decorative fence caps. Upgrade the top of your fence posts with cast iron balls or a pointy cap. If youre going for a whimsical look, plant a fake bird or solar light at the top of a post or two.
  • Change the color. Try staining the wood a different color with an airless sprayer or roll-on stain. It wont change anything too drastically, but a little goes a long way!

Check The Balance Of Soft And Hard Landscaping

How To Prep Your Yard For New Landscaping – Ace Hardware

Its important to balance any landscaping with the size of your house the walls of a larger house present significant vertical hard surfaces, says Cheryl Cummings.

In the design above, Cheryl has planted soft mounds of grasses and flowering hummocks to cushion the edges of the path.

If there are large trees around the boundary or a big open view, the scale will mean that narrow paths and small plants will appear insignificant, so the paved surfaces need to be appropriate to the scale of the house and surroundings, she adds.

If, however, you are opting for a contemporary outdoor space then you may wish to include a higher percentage of hard landscaping, particularly for courtyard garden ideas.
