How Do I Become A Landscaper
If you’re considering a career in landscaping, there are 3 main routes to choose from:
1. Formal training
Depending on your ambitions, you can take a diploma course or a university course in landscaping. A number of diploma level courses are available from TAFE colleges, such as:
- Certificate II in Landscaping
- Certificate III in Landscape Construction
- Certificate IV in Permaculture
- Parks and gardens management
A university level of education will cover a broader range of subjects, including several levels of landscape design, urban open spaces design, site tectonics and designed ecologies. Landscape design is a three year course of study, which is a big commitment, but can be worth it in light of how much landscapers earn.
When you’ve completed your studies, you will be qualified to take on large-scale projects or you can focus on residential landscaping. At the university level, you can take a four or five year course of study and qualify to become a landscape architect.
The difference between a landscape designer and a landscape architect is largely in the level of formal study. A landscape architect needs training in landscape design, but must also have a thorough understanding of construction techniques. Landscape architects work with architects and builders and must understand their disciplines.
3. On-the-job training

Change your location or clientele: Landscapers who work in more affluent areas with lots of green space residential and commercial will have a larger client base. Also, seek out areas where demand outpaces supply. If youre one of the few landscapers in town, you can charge higher rates.
Scale your business: There is only so much work you can accept as a solo landscaper. By increasing the size of your staff, you can take on more projects. Nearly 60% of the landscapers we surveyed plan to hire new employees in 2022 to scale their business.

- A landscaper in Sydney is working in a temperate climate
- A landscaper in Brisbane needs to know which plants thrive in Brisbane’s subtropical climate
They also need to know local regulations, which may include which plants are considered weeds in the local environment and what trees are on the protected species list in the area. A trained landscaper can quickly learn what they need to know, but in general, landscapers build their reputations in one location.
