What To Look For When Buying Ride On Mower

NEW Hart Electric Riding Mower | 30-Inch Lawn Tractor Review

When choosing a new ride-on mower, you need to consider budget over all else. What you spend is what you get with any lawn mower, and riding lawn mowers are no different.

Some riding lawn mowers cost upwards of $25,000, and some cost as little as $3,000 but there is a huge difference in comfort, and quality as you might expect.

There are three main factors to help you decide what lawnmower you want, regardless of budget: Whats the turning circle like? What fuel does it use? How wide does it cut?

Well explain each in detail below, but by understanding these three factors, youll be able to find the best budget option for you.

Turning Circle

While perfect corners might sound nice, its important to keep in mind that this is a luxury, only usually afforded to golf course mowers, and high end zero-turn mowers.

Perfect corners on ride-on mowers are achieved by front mounted cutting decks, where the driver sits behind the blade, therefore being able to drive the cutting blades right into the corners and over the lawn edges for perfect results.

That might seem useful, but think about your garden. If your lawn has curved corners and hedges, then you can save at least $1,000 by choosing a riding mower with a central cutting deck, which will do a perfectly good job of lawn-hedge cutting.

What Fuel to Use

Most lawn mowers are still sold with petrol or diesel engines, but the future is electric, so why not take the leap now while electric mowers are less expensive than petrol.

Cub Cadet Cc30 Review

Whats that yellow drive-around thingy? Its always a Cub Cadet. Their bestselling rear riding mower, the Cub Cadet CC 30 is once again back in circulation. It seems towards the end of the last year, this particular model was removed from stock in all stores and the reason being that Cub Cadet unlike other manufacturers does not mindlessly make machines. They work with a limited quota. And after running out of stock, the Cub Cadet Factory begins producing their most demanded products again and again. And the CC30 model is thankfully one of them. 2015 starts with plenty of this rear rider in stock and the Cub Cadet CC 30 is once more among the top picks on all lawn and garden websites. One disclaimer before I begin diving into the nitty-gritty of my review the Cub Cadet is probably one of the most expensive rear engine mowers on the market, but it is well worth every penny spent. And, with a price below $2000 it is still a very cheap riding mower.

What Are Riding Lawn Mowers

Home, Garden & More...: Troy

Riding lawn mowers or Ride on mowers are, as the name suggests, lawnmowers that you sit on and drive, but its not quite that simple.

There are a few variations to consider when looking for ride-on lawnmowers, and the first is whether you want a true ride on mower , or a zero-turn mower, which is more expensive, but more accurate, and has a lever steering system.

Riding lawn mowers are perfect for gardeners with big spaces, or contractors with lots of small spaces. They save time, they save effort, and they do a better job than most push mowers with a suspended cutting deck rather than a rolling deck.

Type Of Riding Mowers:

Your performance and time safety depends mainly on the type of mower you choose. We have discussed several types appropriate for certain jobs.

  • Garden Tractors:

Garden tractors are heavyweight mowers that are constructed to take on big jobs. That is why they have stronger engines , heavy transmission, durable bodies, and big size. However, this big size can also be a con because it makes them difficult to control and maneuver. Additionally, they are not suitable for small garages and tight corners. Full-size tractors have two mowing facilities and are more expensive than their competitors.

  • Zero Turn Mowers:

Zero Turn mowers come with most attachments, unlike the previous ones. They already have bagging, mulching, battery displacement, and blade facilities. They may not mow as big as tractors but can be used for professional landscaping and large commercial and home yards. The best thing about zero-turn mowers is they have a 360-turning radius and require less manual work. Also, they are easy to control and maneuver. Lastly, the four wheels have high traction.

  • Mulching Mowers:

If you want to manage your clippings and are worried about the state of your lawn soil then mulching mowers are made for you. Mulching mowers are nothing like heavy-duty mowers but they work fine in managing small yards with low grass height. The grass is cut into small size clips that retribute the nutrients to the soil. You can also collect the grass to bag.

  • Rear Engine Mowers:

Are Riding Mowers Safe To Use

Generally, but they are powerful machines with sharp blades.Always stay alert when behind the wheel. Limb and eye injuries are the mostcommon, which is why the American Society for Surgery of the Hand haspublished a variety of safety tips. When using a riding mower, follow thesesafety tips:

  • Always check the mower thoroughly before use
  • Pick up any rocks, sticks and other objects in the mowingarea
  • Wear protective gear including goggles, earplugs, and longpants
  • Keep children and pets inside
  • Never ride in reverse for extended periods

Also, avoid mowing wet grass. The water adds weight andvolume to each blade. Cutting wet grass makes your mower work hard, wearingdown the blades and engine. Also, it creates an uneven cut. Of course, neveruse an electric mower on wet grass due to the significant risk ofelectrocution.

The Size And Shape Of Your Lawn

The size of the lawn helps determine the type of mower:

Half an Acre to One Acre

You dont need anything with tons of power here. Choose amower with a deck up to 42 inches long for the best maneuverability. Also, themower should have an engine with at least 14 horsepower.

One to Two Acres

Youll want a wider, more powerful mower. The deck lengthshould be between 42 and 46 inches. The engine should have between 14 and 16horsepower.

Three Acres and Up

Large estates require a powerful riding mower. Choose onewith an engine deck between 46 and 54 inches, and an engine with 18 to 24horsepower.

Aside from acreage, the type of terrain is also essential. Alower-powered engine is fine for flat, clear areas. However, youll want astronger mower for conquering hills and bumpy terrain. Additionally, azero-turn-radius mower allows for the best maneuverability when mowing anuneven landscape.

What Are Riding Lawn Mowers Exactly

Riding lawn mowers are usually quicker and easier to use than push or self-propelled lawn mowers due to their large engines and wider mowing decks, which can cut a larger area of grass in one pass. The ability to ride the mower around can also be crucial for homeowners who experience any back issues and cant walk behind an average lawn mower without fatigue, said McKenzie.

Experts said that shoppers with more than three-fourths of an acre of yard would benefit from a riding lawn mower since they can significantly cut down on mowing time. However, if your yard is less than a half an acre, a riding lawn mower can make mowing your lawn more tedious than it needs to be because of the size of the machine in comparison to the yard, said Steckel. At that point, its easier to use a push or self-propelled lawn mower these types of mowers also turn the lawn mowing process into an opportunity for exercise and physical activity.

There are three main types of riding lawn mowers to consider: traditional lawn tractors, zero turning radius mowers and rear engine riding mowers.

  • Lawn tractors are gas-powered machines with a front mounted engine and a steering wheel for easy maneuvering you simply sit on top and steer while the machine cuts the grass. This is the most common and price-effective type of riding lawn mower, said Steckel. They also usually have a wide turn radius, making them a good option for big lawns with slopes and hills.
  • How To Compare Ride

Before you choose a ride-on mower, take a moment to think about your lawn. How big is it? Is it flat or sloping? Are there obstacles like trees and garden beds you need to mow around? This will help you narrow down your mower choices and decide what features you want in a ride-on.

When comparing ride-on mowers, consider the following:

    Engine and power output

Rear-engine mowers tend to be smaller and have less power than their front-engine counterparts. More power means more cutting ability but it also uses more fuel, so compare the power output figures for all models. While 16ââ 20Hp will be sufficient for lawns of up to an acre, larger areas may require more power.

Check the torque figures as well, as more torque means a better cut in tall or thick grass. Finally, don’t forget to consider the type of engine. V-twin engines offer more power and less vibration than single-cylinder engines, and the reduced vibration generally means longer engine life and greater comfort.

    Safety features

Safety features include a seat safety switch that shuts off the blades when you get off the seat, and automatically shutting off the blades when you select reverse.

    Cutting width

The ideal cutting width will depend on the size of the area you have to mow however, remember that any obstacles and the type of terrain you have to mow could influence the width you choose. As a general guide:

    Transmission

    Cutting height

    Comfort and ease of use

    Speed

    Fuel tank

Troy-Bilt Neighborhood Rider 30″ Riding Lawn Mower

Riding mowers are usually simple to operate. The engine powers both the blades and the wheels, although most mowers have theoption to turn off the blades when driving.

As the driver, youll sit on top of the mower in the seat. With rear-engine mowers, the seat is typically in the middle. With front-enginemowers, the seat is usually in the rear, which can create a slight visibilityissue.
